Suki is an interesting companion, and Miwako has taught her how to do some tricks. She and her robotic cat, Suki, greet new guests and provide help to current ones. Miwako looks after the front desk and seems to have a deft touch with the guests. Yumi has never met a boundary she doesn’t like to charge past. She also becomes fast friends with Bess and George and texts you pictures of the three of them throughout the game. She is an extrovert who makes her own, shall we say… fairy tale-inspired clothing, and runs off at the mouth every chance she gets. Yumi hustled away to the city as fast as her high heels could take her. Too bad Yumi has other things in mind, causing all kinds of family strife. Most of the characters you meet are here, but there is also a bento stand where you meet Miwako’s sister, Yumi, whose apartment you’ll also visit. ![]() The biggest environment is the ryokan itself, with its many rooms, bath houses, and guest spaces like the garden. I was happily surprised by how many locations there are to explore, adding up to a considerable play time of about 15-20 hours. Could someone be trying to make guests think the ryokan is haunted on purpose? Still, being the inquisitive sort, she’s not prepared to believe in ghosts just yet. But Nancy doesn’t get really suspicious until she has her own supernatural encounter. They also consider the number 4 to be bad luck, so it is a little disconcerting when Nancy discovers her room has mysteriously been changed from number 24 to 4. Fortunately, they are able to multi-task and help Nancy out from time to time.Īs you begin to investigate, you’ll learn that the Japanese are enthralled with hauntings and good ghost stories. They are attending a conference, so while Nancy teaches and sleuths, they learn about new inventions and technology and take advantage of Kyoto’s night life. Luckily, Nancy is not alone in Kyoto, as Bess and George have come along as well. But no matter how loudly they protest, the inn has amassed a reputation and has now become a destination for ghost hunters while scaring away all the other guests. They insist there are no ghosts, and that the persistent rumours and concerns from guests are just the product of confused interpretations: shadows from branches moving across the paper walls mistaken for human forms, strange noises caused by the ancient structure. But the innkeeper Takae and her granddaughter Miwako won’t admit there is anything unnatural happening. Only moments after Nancy arrives, a portrait of the innkeeper’s long-dead daughter Kazumi crashes to the ground. These otherworldly aspirations are never particularly compelling, as it turns out, but even so, there are interesting characters to meet and plenty to see and do in this otherwise solid installment. ![]() It is also apparently haunted, giving the teen sleuth a much-needed mystery to fill her spare time. It has paper sliding walls, traditional Tatami mats, a beautiful garden, and a real sense of history. Nancy spends her days in Kyoto teaching English to school children, while at night she stays in an authentic ryokan, or traditional Japanese guest house. And indeed, there is plenty of Japanese culture to absorb. Since I have been obsessed with Japan since watching Shogun, I was excited that Her Interactive selected this location for their newest mystery. ![]() ![]() In Nancy Drew: Shadow at the Water’s Edge, Nancy gets to spend time in the Land of the Rising Sun. ![]() NES games were graphically superior to their predecessors, and the extra memory allowed for multiple levels and storytelling. Imagine a finished image on your wall. Was it a rock, a feeling about the place (moody, serene, beautiful, scary)? First think about what attracted you to the scene and caused you to set up your camera. ![]() Here are some steps to follow to help you with photographic visualization before you shoot: The next time you’re out photographing, try taking a moment to disconnect from the reality of the scene in front of your lens, and try to visualize a photograph before you shoot. These are all things I consider, usually even before I set the camera up. We can plan for these interpretive and expressive things before releasing the shutter! We can skew color relationships and local contrasts to strengthen our statement. We can visualize making a sky or other element lighter or darker than the meter says it ought to be. Photographic visualization also includes what we have come to call post-processing. Will a longer or shorter exposure enhance motion in a scene? Is it stronger vertically or horizontally? Are there any distracting elements around the edges of your image? But in all cases, visualization dictates the equipment and techniques required to achieve the vision. It might mean choosing a particular vantage point to emphasize the qualities of a foreground object. It could be as simple as ‘seeing’ a final color image in delicate pastels rather than in bold, vibrant colors and contrasts. Photo visualization does not, however, require that you see a finished print that is markedly different from the real qualities of the actual scene. He visualized how he wanted the print to look and used his understanding of technique to realize that vision. ![]() In Ansel’s case, his knowledge of technique - knowing what a strong red filter ought to do - enabled him to imagine, or visualize, a final print with a much darker sky than the yellow filter would have afforded. One of Ansel’s favorite sayings was, “There’s nothing worse than a sharp image of a fuzzy concept.” At the same time, a concept can be sorely limited in clarity by a fuzzy knowledge of technique. It’s also possessing the technical know-how to create the image that’s in your mind, even if it differs dramatically from the reality of the scene in front of you. It is the ability to picture the essence of the final print in your mind before releasing the shutter. Simply put, photographic visualization is the confluence of imagination and technique. So…just what IS photographic visualization and how do you visualize a photograph before you shoot? To my way of thinking, it is the single most important element in creating an expressive image. He discovered photographic visualization.Īnsel ultimately came to refer to this freedom from recording only what the camera and lens could capture in a technical sense as visualization, and he wrote about it extensively during his lifetime.īy itself, photographic visualization doesn’t assure a successful final image, but it does set the stage for the ensuing choreography of photographic steps. For the first time, he was conscious of the difference between what his camera lens saw (the literal) and what he saw in his mind’s eye (the expressive) as the final print. The image that resulted from this experiment proved to be a turning point for Ansel in his photographic explorations. That is called photographic visualization. With one glass plate left unexposed, he daringly made another exposure, this time using a red filter that he hoped would result in an image that was more in tune with what he imagined, or visualized, the final image should be, instead of what was actually in front of him. There, he made a dramatic image of the monolith using a mild yellow filter to darken the sky a bit-a generally recommended and accepted practice in those days.īut what Ansel felt about the scene before him was more dramatic than what he knew the yellow filter would give him. In April 1927, during one of his regular trips to Yosemite, a 25-year-old Ansel Adams trekked up to the ‘diving board’ on the west shoulder of Half Dome. ![]() In addition, you can integrate yourself into the video and take advantage of Camtasia’s support for chroma key. However, I don't think Fityk is intended for graph plotting quite so much, an area where this feature would be used most.įityk is a powerful, professional curve-fitter, so try it out if you need to fit any complex data or have time to learn to use it. This is one area which needs a bit of work - a standard spreadsheet-type layout for the editor would probably be more usable - it's cramped and fiddly at the moment. You can't interact with the graph by clicking data points (although you can drag curves around with the mouse), so you have to use the data editor. If you untick a record, it won't be considered in the fit (useful for fitting only to sections of the data).įityk is a useful app, but it can be frustrating to use. Just one more pointer - press Data | Editor. Fityk will plot your data on the black graph pane - right cick anywhere in this area and choose a larger 'data point size'. Get your dataset in CSV (comma seperated value) form and fire-up Fityk. Click and drag in this pane to zoom in on a section of the graph. Right-click on this area to change comparison modes. Fityk offers a simple algorithm for peak-detection. You can use this to show the deviation of each data point from the fitted equation, which makes it easier to identify possible anomalies. You'll see that just below the main plot is an auxiliary plot. ![]() This will run a fitting algorithm and find the best fit for your data. What does your data look like? There's a drop-down box on the toolbar which lets you choose what type of function the program should try to fit, so obviously choose 'linear' if it's a straight line and so on.
